چکیده
In dentistry, acrylates have been used for preparing denture bases for 50 years. Although polymethylmethacrylates (PMMA) are known to be an ideal base material, they possess some undesirable mechanical properties, especially their impact strength and tensile strength, which appear to be unsatisfactory for some applications. Additives and fibers have therefore been used to enhance and improve these properties over the last two decades. The present article describes the mechanical properties, impact and tensile strength of PMMA reinforced with chopped ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber (6 mm long). It was found that, although the processing involved for high loading of fibers into the PMMA was difficult, the resulting improvement of impact strength was substantial.

Effect of Thermocycling and Polyethylene Fibre Addition on Impact and Transversal Strength of Heat Cured Acrylic Resin Denture Base Material
Background: Heat cured acrylic resin is the most widely used material in the manufacture ofdenture base, but has mechanical properties weakness (transversal strength and impact strength). Alternative to increase the mechanical properties of acrylic resin is the utilization of reinforcing fibre that is polyethylene fibre that has advantage such as good aesthetic, easy to manipulate and increase ...
متن کاملThe effect of short polyethylene fiber with different weight percentages on diametral tensile strength of conventional and resin modified glass ionomer cements
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of polyethylene fiber on diametral tensile strength of conventional and resin modified glass ionomer cements. MATERIAL AND METHODS 60 specimens in 6 groups (n=10) were prepared. In group 1 conventional glass ionomer (Fuji GC) and in group 2 resin modified glass ionomer (Fuji LC) were as control groups. In group 3 and 4 conventiona...
متن کاملTensile strength and impact strength of color modified acrylic resin reinforced with titanium dioxide nanoparticles
BACKGROUND Poor mechanical properties are among the main limitations of acrylic resins. Addition of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles to acrylic resin has been shown to improve its mechanical properties with an adverse effect on its color. Thus, this study sought to assess the tensile and impact strength of a color modified heat cure acrylic resin reinforced with TiO2 nanoparticles. MATER...
متن کاملEffect of Reinforcement Using Stainless Steel Mesh, Glass Fibers, and Polyethylene on the Impact Strength of Heat Cure Denture Base Resin - An In Vitro Study
BACKGROUND The impact strength of denture base resin is of great concern and many approaches have been made to strengthen acrylic resin dentures. The objective of this study was to compare the impact strength of the denture base resin with and without reinforcement and to evaluate the impact strength of denture base resin when reinforced with stainless steel mesh, glass fiber, and polyethylene ...
متن کاملEffect of Siwak on Certain Mechanical Properties of Acrylic Resin
Background: (PMMA) has been used in dental prosthetic devices for almost 70 years; three features have contributed for its success: excellent appearance, simple processing technique and easy repair. However, the resistance to impact and fracture of PMMA during function is low. Various methods for enhancing strength of the acrylic resin denture bases have been reported. This study was designed t...
